Bernhard Lang was born on 24th of February 1957 in Linz, Austria. He lives
in Vienna. After finishing highschool and piano studies at the Bruckner Konservatorium
he moved to Graz to study Jazz piano, Arranging and classical Piano. Between
1977 and 1981 he worked with various Jazzbands, the most important one was
the "Erich Zann Septett."He studied Philosophy and German Literature at Graz
between 1976 and 1981.
After having finished his piano studies he started to study composition with
Polish composer Andrej Dobrowolsky, wh o introduced him to the techniques
of New Music. He also studied with H. M. Pressl who taught him counterpoint
and introduced him to the work of J.M.Hauer. Since 1988 he has been working
as a teacher for theory of harmony and counterpoint at the University of Music
and dramatic Arts in Graz. At Graz he also met Gösta Neuwirth who was to become
one of his main influences. Georg Friedrich Haas introduced him into microtonal
music and commissioned a quartertone piece for the Musikprotokoll 1988.
In the meantime his pieces were performed at the Steirische Herbst Festival
(1984,1988,1991,1995,1999), at the Moscow Alternativa Festival and Moscow
Modern Festival, Biennale Hannover 1997, Tage Absoluter Musik Allentsteig
I and II, Resistance Fluctuations Los Angeles, Lisbon, Madrid, Berlin, Wien
Modern, Hörgänge Vienna and many others. He worked together with several Artist
Groups:'Intro-Spection Graz', 'Fond', 'KlangArten Wien', Salon 13 Vienna (C.Gadenstaedter/L.Spalt),
Projektgruppe Neue Musik Bremen (1997 and 2000) etc. Some projects were done
in collaboration with Winfried Ritsch ('Hexagrammatikon','Mozart 1789', 'Versuch
über das Vergessen 2'), Christian Marczik ('Rondell - Remise'), Edmund Steirer
('Porn Again'), Christian Loidl (Icht I and Icht II, DW2).
In 1998 he was a guest lecturer with Peter Weibels Media class in Vienna,
1999 in Iowa city at the local university. Now he is also member of various
Improvisationsgroups. He occasionally does studio work for various bands (Fetish
69). Future Projects will include a music theater production "The Theater
of Repetitions" (Steirischer Herbst/Opera House Graz 2002) , an orchestra
piece for Donaueschingen 2002, an orchestrapiece for Musica Viva Munich, an
orchestrapiece for Konzerthausgesellschaft Vienna 2005, another piece for
Klangforum Vienna 2003 (Witten) etc.
