James Clarke was born in Buckinghamshire in England in October 1957. He studied
at Southampton University and The City University in London, and for two years
in Finland on a Finnish Government Scholarship. Between 1978 and '82 he was
conductor and co-director of the new music ensemble "Suoraan". His
works have been selected for performance at several European festivals, notably
at Gaudeamus in 1983, 1984 and 1985, and have been played and broadcast in
Europe and in Australia.
His music has been performed and broadcast frequently in Europe, Australia,
Korea, Taiwan and Japan and has featured in international festivals including
the I.S.C.M., Bath Festival, International Gaudeamus Music Week (works selected
in 1983, '84, '85, '87), Aspekte Salzburg, Musikprotokoll Graz, Neue Musik
in Lüneburg, Journées de Musique Contemporaine Paris, Pan Music
Festival Seoul, Internationale Ferienkurse Darmstadt, Antidogma Musica Turin,
Insel Musik Berlin, Festival Nieuwe Muziek Middelburg, Nuove Forme Sonore
Rome, Ars Musica Brussels.
