Bernhard Gál (a.k.a. gal) is a composer, sound artist and musicologistfrom
Vienna, Austria who creates electro-acoustic music as well ascompositions
for acoustic instruments, also integrating spatial andperformative elements
into his work. As a (sound-) artist gal combines
sound, light, objects, video projections and spatial concepts as equalparts
of his inter-media installations.As a laptop musician, Galperforms in solo
concerts and improvises with other musicians like BrianLabycz, Tung Chao-Ming,
et al.
After studies at Vienna's University of Music (Sound engineering) andthe University
of Vienna (Musicology) emphasis on compositional andartistic activities. 1997-98
year-long residency in New York City(Participation in the Oral History Project
"The Austrian Heritage
Collection" at Leo Baeck Institute, NY). Since 1998 gal works as afreelance
composer and artist. Currently Gal resides in Berlin, pursuinga DAAD artist-in-residency.
gal's work has been presented in concerts and exhibitions throughoutEurope,
and in Japan, Taiwan and the USA. Collaborations witharchitects, choreographers,
musicians, painters, performance-, media- and video artists, e.g. John Roach,
Mandy Morrison, Christian Aichinger,Emre Tuncer and Tung Chao-Ming. Since
1997 artistic collaboration with the Japanese architect and installation artist
Yumi Kori ('audio-architectural installations').
Recipient of various awards and grants, e.g. Composition Award ofInitiative
Minderheiten Vienna 2000, Grants of BKA-Kunstsektion Austria 2000/2003, Karl
Hofer-Prize - University of Tthe Arts Berlin 2001, SKE Grant Vienna 2002,
DAAD Fellowship Berlin 2003).
Several CD-Releases, e.g. bestimmung new york (Durian, Austria 1999), Defragmentation/blue
(Plate Lunch, Germany 2000), relisten (Intransitive, USA 2001), contributions
to various compilations.
