Born in Erdos, Inner Mongolia in 1966, Qin Wenchen began to learn Chinese
folk music at the age of 9. After graduating from a composition class of the
Mongolian Art School in 1987, Qin went to Shanghai to study at the Conservatory
of Music composition with Zhu Jian'er. On graduation in 1992 he was appointed
composition teacher at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. From
1998 to 2001 Qin Wenchen continued his studies at the Folkwang Hochschule
Essen with Nicolaus A. Huber and graduated with distinction. In 2001 he returned
to China to continue his teaching career at the Central Conservatory. Qin
has gained international awards for works as the suona concerto Calling Phoenix,
the orchestra work Yin ji and the ensemble piece He-yi. Ensemble Recherche,
Tokyo City Symphony Orchestra, Kassel Stadt Theater Orchestra and the Nieuw
Ensemble among others have performed the works of Qin Wenchen. He has been
invited to attend major new music festivals worldwide.
